Wildlife Photography Of Birds: A Study Of Grey Herons

Truth be known, taking pictures of nature and wildlife is so easy today that it’s possible to take more pictures in an hour than photographers from previous generations were able to take in a year. Nevertheless you still want to maximize your wildlife photography opportunities because nothing can compare with the pure beauty of nature and wildlife.

Wildlife photography is a very popular subject but this article is going to suggest a framework of tips for getting yourself organized to get the most out of the time and money you spend learning and enjoying wildlife photography.

We think you should focus your thoughts and preparations around 4 major areas:

1. Know your gear
2. Know your subjects
3. Know your environment
4. Know your limitations

Now…let’s discuss them each briefly.

Know your gear….means that you should know what your cameras and accessories can and cannot do. One of the skills of great photographers is being able to use their eyes to see great photo opportunities as the camera does.

You can’t walk around looking at everything through your camera’s viewfinder. That would look stupid. But you can develop a sensitivity to good photo opportunities when you see them. You should be able to make wide sweeps with your eyes and detect where the good pictures are by framing them in your minds eye.

Know your subjects….means that you should realize that your dealing with another species and, in most cases, you’re in their domain. Don’t make them mad. Some of them…..sure, they’ll run. But others….they’re big enough to take their anger out on you in most uncomfortable ways. So remember…you’re a guest there. Act like it. You’ll also find that by respecting the animals and nature you’ll oftentimes get much better shots too.

Know your environment…means that you should be familiar with the environment wherein your pictures are framed. If you’re taking pictures of birds of prey who co-exist with man in cities…you’ll need to become familiar with the kinds of places where those birds hunt and live in cities.

Don't Disturb Your Subject, He could Miss Out On Dinner

If you’re taking pictures in the dessert, you need to be aware of the ways that animals adapt to life in the dessert. That way you’ll know where to find the best pictures. If you’re taking pictures of the dessert itself, you need to be aware that it can also be a dangerous place (i.e. sudden lower temperatures at night).

If you’re taking pictures in a swamp, watch out for alligators. Some of them would love to let you take a picture from the inside of their stomach.

Know your limits…..means that you should be aware of your physical limits when walking around out in ‘the boonies’. You don’t always have to go far out in the country, dessert or jungle to get good nature shots but, if you do, you should remember that you’ve got physical limits of how much gear you can carry, how far and what you can do in the various extremes of terrain you might encounter.

Just plan wisely any time you get too far off the beaten path in your wildlife photography expeditions and you’ll have a good time and probably get some great shots.
